[edit] Culture shock
- Separating the East and the West is a great gulf when in the 50s and 60s the mindsets of half of the world populations are at odds with one another. The communist bloc dominated by the Chinese, Russians and the North Koreans besides Ho Chi Minh and Mao Zedong Joseph Stalin and many places elsewhere facing the western mindset was the the brink of war, or already labeled ( by western standards) as a " a Cold war ". It meant confrontation at all levels of government and even at the bureaucratic levels of diplomacy. The West relentlessly fought a hidden war with rockets and space technologies to conquer the outer space with the cultivation of sophisticated nuclear bombs plus the strengthening of all forces available aimed at one single goal: to defeat the Eastern blocs. Each side seem to resort with many lies and are at odds with one another. There was no trust or co-operation in matters of the general interest of their common people, even when dealing with natural diseases and the spread of virus borne plagues among the ppl of the global village as well the infestation of diseases among crops and vegetation. At the highest levels or with many nations levels -at the UN sponsored UNESCO there was little in term of co-operation. The world mindsets at large were split and culturally shocked into two half(ves). This is the greatest culture shock we had seen historically..and the effects still lingers at many places today. Do U know such demi-gods of the worlds in the 50s and 60s as shown here in the pictures? (Mind U they were the idols of that period in history among hundred of millions of our world's inhabitants)
....whois he?
[edit] Are these old men good at fighting?
..hehehe, of course they are all great exponents of new ideas of fighting (stealth secret plus jungle guerrilla type of fighting the enemies) & therefore experts with the Art of war.. ==CROSS CULTURE== expert Robert Kohl defines culture shock as, "The psychological disorientation most people experience when they move into a culture markedly different from their own. It comes from the experience of encountering ways of doing, organizing, perceiving or valuing things which are different from yours, and which threatens your basic, unconscious belief that your culture's customs, assumptions, values and behaviors are `right'."

[edit] POLITICAL REMARKS
Senator Barack Obama's wife made the first plunder when she remarked " For the first time in my adult life..I am proud of my Country..?" speaking on a political (all ladies) platform ..and considering herself as someone (who is Afro-Asian American - was she never proud of her country be4?), Of course she explained later that she was proud, however (in a moment of plunder) without considering (and contextualizing) she gotten carried in the thinking and honesty made some remarks that would be taken into wrong context and greatly embarrassing those who supported her husband who never mentioned about race or color of skin.hehehehehe.. of course it was a mistake, why she not be open to confess it?...2

[edit] Hotel services
- So & so had never been to America, so for the first time she went as she was dragged along by his own western minded elder brother. They checked into a hotel room to sleep. Of course it was all three in the room ( the sister , the brother plus his wife) it was two in the morning when they arrived at the Comfort room. The first timer in U.S.A. was too excited to sleep, so she saw the TV! Oh she think that will help to get to bed fast But she couldn't find the button to turn it on. She called the service fellow at the Zero number (she knew they will help). So he come just to show the button on the remote control! It was a chargeable US$14 for a movie service..charge! When the elder brother paid the hotel check out bill, She (that sister) was shocked..to see it ? why the white Man thot those ladies wanted a service..so he had to charge them at 2 a.m. in the morning at nite! it's 14 dollars for a movie trip upstairs.
[edit] Food services
My wife and sister and me went to eat an Italian restaurant in a polish place ( all shinny ) in the town. My son footed the bill; it was about US 100 for four people. My wife was shocked when my son wrote a Visa card charge with a twenty dollar added for service tip! Wow what a tip, eh? You must be rich, son ? she hinted! However, dinner service was first class, anyway..so?
The obedient son replied, "Mom that is the normal thing to-do here, and that's how most of them expects and get paid by the stipends!" so another shocking surprise..
Besides.. Chinese food esp. those takeaways is a shocking different kind..so oily and expansive plus expensive..lah!
[edit] how to-get AngMohs upset?
Call her a bitch, and him a bastard..Hey don't try it U can get badly hurted!: Alien talk 07:45, 2 November 2007 (SGT) In a reverse (cultural) situations try calling someone (Chinese) in Singapore (in the dialect) the same "bitch", well it's isn't that offensive, I know one lady with that name too!(Miss bitch!). However, "bastard is still offensive to the English educated, whereas the Chinese just laugh it as a response to their understanding that only certain people are offended by that (Only AngMohs)!
[edit] Taxi services
( a sc ene between a celebrity and a taxi driver locally happening quite often)
- look the subborn taxi driver even refused me when i ask (OR demanded? of course he feel insulted as a lowly driver) for help...hehehehe
- so the flight is going to be missed, i 'm so busily
- don't he know i am go to ..and a very important ....
(eventually she get a lawyer to sue the taxi company for missing her actions ..i wish she learn about cultures in in the local setup: respect & curtesy go a long way when U can get help
[edit] Public display: showering in the open!
- You are used to do certain things as the normal way you are used to live. Like when you take a shower, you go inside the bathroom or shower room to do it. however, when you go places where there are no shower- or bath- room to take a shower, and a shower may be in the open ( for all to see! )when others can see you under the spray of water! So you are shocked because you are never use to wear anything when the water is turn on. Here you are wearing all your (only)clothes, and it is another shock to realise that you will be walking along with wet cloths on! Normally you have no such shocking experiences until you visit another new places where the people take showers in the open and the women folk wear a convenient sarong(a piece of material cloth tied around their body ) to shower in.
- taht's is BTW a cultural shock you will experience for the first time, and get used to it, it really will not able to cause another shock, when U see it done again.
Expert Robert Kohl defines culture shock as, "The psychological disorientation most people experience when they move into a culture markedly different from their own. It comes from the experience of encountering ways of doing, organising, perceiving or valuing things which are different from yours, and which threatens your basic, unconscious belief that your culture's customs, assumptions, values and behaviours are `right'."
- 3When adjusting to the new environment, there are usually many forms of cultural shocks to be encountered, and I suggest a slow and pliant adoption of certain positive habits along with living in the West
N.B. cultural shocks are considered as rude behaviour when it's applied to someone somewhere who becomes a cultural shock victim or generally applied..to the sensitive feelings of a group of people..it's dangerous games too, one can get killed when ppl get angry!!
[edit] aCTRESS TRAP, or better be a bus driver
I mean life is not exactly paradise after you come out of the rabbit hole. Then waht's isn't ? The answer is simply this: don't,don't don't ever dream to be..just let opportunities come knocking after you done all to get as many options as possible and don't ever wanna be n an actress..it's a sad trap without option of your own, like the devil's trap. I wanna be a bus captain, so be it so! U r better off without the glamorous life of an actress, and you can buy SBS shares and lose your money without saying easy money and U will try to be careful in spending, and learning to live with less.than an actress do:wowowow| 08:39, 20 February 2008 (SGT)that's BTW is no cultural trap, but in deciding you chooses..no surprises. I luv to be a bus captainhehehehehebut I'm already a grandmamama wi some many kids to look after! FROM THE qUEEN OF sbc

[edit] Happy Chinese Lunar New Year!
What is exactly the reason we are so happy about the CNY?
- In among most Chinese we don't realise that the CNY is an occasion in historical past and part of the ancient customs which has constantly refreshing meaning year afer year!
- Among us <Singaporean> all we think is the "Gong Xi Fa Chai" ! That is not exactly our reason for the new year. The main social re-union dinner or tronelienfun is not the reason either even though it is an important and social custom that we kept for years!
- The real meaning for CNY is that we all Chinese young and old, women men and everyone from time immemorial past has one more year added to our age..ie we are one year older and this is our birthday.
- Years ago we Chinese had no watch or clock or calender to show, nevertheless during the first day of every new year we know, because every first day of the year became the occasion for all Chinese to remember: Somehow it has been adapted as the personal birthdays of all Chinese! Our Chinese birthdays all happened and celebrated jointly once during this CNY!
- Therefore the next time you can explain to your non-Chinese friend why this is your reason for happiness..
- Every year we have an animal to show the transition from one old year to the next! This year is the Year of the golden Pig.
I am so happy I am one more year old at 60 now.. and so ..happy birthday to all our Chinese readers too: Alien talk 03:44, 22 February 2007 (SGT)
