The durian is a South East Asian fruit that apparently you either love or you hate. I don’t know about the love part, because I have only experienced the other polar reaction and won’t die disappointed if it never passes these lips again.

How does one describe this abomination fruit? It’s about the size of a rockmelon, green and spiky. And when you cut it open, there’s a seed in the middle (if recollection serves me well) with the (apparently) edible flesh in segments around that. It is pulpy and messy and above all, smells like sewage[[5]]. And apparently if you mix it with alcohol, it can kill you. Delightful, yes? And there’s your connection.

It wasn’t until twelve months after that first night that we went in search of dinner, when the durian came back into season that I finally made the connection. There was nothing wrong with those eateries. It wasn’t the smell of sewage. It was durian season.

The other standout memory of the durian I have is from when I was working on site and my phone rang. It was the Clerk of Works. That was kind of strange, because they had a container office just like mine. And it was about 10 feet away from mine as well. I knew that something was up. None-the less, being the contractor, you do things like walk next door to see what is going on and so that is what I did.

As I reached out to the handle of the door, a pre-emptive smell caught my nose, giving just a moment to prepare for what was about to occur.

I pulled the door open and there they were. The Clerk of Works and the Resident Engineer, at their respective desks, facing each other, the pulp of durian seemingly everywhere as the stench of it assailed my nose in a way that was certainly more foul than fair.

“Its durian, do you want some?” The CoW asked gleefully. I politely declined and retired from their office to the enormously entertained gales of laughter that followed me out the door. I am sure that it provided hours of entertainment for them as they told their friends over dinner about the young Aussie engineer’s reaction to the durian. They can have the story and their durian both!

I did, before leaving Singapore, try the fruit once. Once was more than enough.

• In kedah , Malaysia, some durian farmers have cultivated a durian that give Oomphs when someone eat it with gusto!

Warning, warning : Don't drink (wine, alcoholic drinks) and eat durian at the same time or together, : you can die or death in a couple of minutes! It is a fatal concoction.
