Bombardier MOVIA C951 is a type of train built by Bombardier Transportation for use on the Downtown Line of the Mass Rapid Transit system in Singapore.

History

In the turnkey contract C951, 4 tenderers were shortlisted - Bombardier, Alstom, Kawasaki Heavy Industries and Hyundai Rotem.

On 8 November 2008, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) awarded the contract for the supply of Downtown Line trains to Bombardier at a value of S$689.7 million.

Operation

The C951 trains run on an automated system (without attendant), relying on "continuous two-way digital communication" between each controlled train and the control centre that controls the entire line.

Features

Design

The C951 trains may include several features that are seen in the C830C trains.[1]

New features include:

  • an ergonomic seat profile;
  • red reserved seats, which allows for clearer separation between normal and reserved seats;
  • perch seats, replacing the two-seaters at the ends of the car;
  • hand grips utilising joints instead of straps, providing commuters a steadier grip;

Dynamic Route Map Display (DRMD)

These dynamic route map display panels will provide commuters for their journey status, route information, as well as which side the train doors will open on.

Platform Gap Width Reduction (PGWR)

The train doors have a frangible gap made of rubber that protrudes out. The platform-train gap will then be reduced, preventing passenger accidents due to the platform gap.

Others

The train will have regenerative braking which is usable over a larger range of speeds. This will generate electricity when the train slows, feeding it back to the rail network.

Trainset numbers

Individual cars are given a five-digit serial number by the rail operator, SBS Transit, numbers ranging from 9001x to 9073x, whereby "x" depends on the carriage type.

  • The first digit is always a 9.
  • The next three digits is the train identification number. A full length train of 3 cars will have the same identification number.
  • The last digit denotes the carriage of the train, ending with 1, 2 and 3 in a full length train.
