History

The C751B trains were bought mainly to complement the existing trains due to the opening of the Changi Airport Extension on the East West Line. These trains began revenue service in 2001. Unlike its older counterparts, the C751B trains features a new livery which consist of mainly black and a more slanted and streamlined look.

Some of the C751B trains were also installed with luggage racks for travelers to place their bags easily as they travels to Changi Airport, but was subsequently removed when the through-train service was removed.

Fragmented Gearbox

On 13 April 2002, a fault was detected in a C751B train and was subsequently withdrawn to the Changi Depot for investigations. As the trains was under warranty, engineers from the manufacturer inspect for fault and found metal fragments in gearbox. The fragmented gearbox was then replace with a new one flown in on 22 April. Further check on 23 April founded that the other 20 trains also have fragmented gearbox and the whole fleet was grounded until the fragmented gearbox was fixed. The first 8 trains was then returned to service in early May 2002. The last trains was then return to service in June 2002.

Trainset Numbering

  • The car numbers of the trains range from x311 to x352, where x depends on the carriage type.
  • The first digit depends upon whether the car is the first, second or third car from the end of the train it is nearer to, where the first car has a 3, the second has a 1 and the third has a 2.
  • The other 3 digits is the train identification number. A full length train of 6 cars have 2 different identification number, one for the first 3 cars, and the same number plus 1, for the other three. The smaller number is always at the front.
    • For example, trainset 351/352 would consist of 6 cars with serial number 3351, 1351, 2351, 2352, 1352 and 3352 respectively.
  • Depending on the direction of travel, the sequence may be reversed.
