Pek Kio
Pek Kio is an estate in southern Singapore.
Etymology and other names[edit]
Pek Kio comes from the Hokkien, literally meaning 'white bridge'. This supposedly refers to a white bridge that once spanned the the Kampong Java Canal, where KK Hospital stands today. Other white bridges in the area that purportedly gave the area its name include the one spanning a section of the Rochor Canal at the junction of Keng Lee and Hertford Roads.
Another name for the area, currently not in common usage, is Little England. This refers to the various roads in the area named after towns in England, specifically - Bristol, Cambridge (Midlands), Carlisle (North), Derbyshire, Devonshire (an archaic name for what is now known as Devon), Gloucester, Hertford, Kent, Oxford (South), Rutland, Truro. Owen Road is the only road in Little England not named after any shire or place in the United Kingdom or Ireland; the road was named after George P. Owen, sportsman and secretary of the Cricket Club from 1887 - 1920.
