Station sinking incident

In February 2005, excavation for the tunnels under the existing North East Line station for the Circle Line interchange station hit an unusually large body of groundwater. This caused settlement of the North East Line station as well as the Serangoon viaduct directly above the station, with the station sinking by 1cm. As a result, trains bound for Punggol pulling off the station had to pass by the affected area at a lower speed.[1] By the first few months of 2007, train speeds started picking up once again after the excavation was near completion.

Artworks

  • NE12-Memories of Childhood.png
North East Line: Memories of Childhood by Eng Joo Heng
Woodcut prints rendered in striking primary colours give this work a heart-warming and joyful look back at childhood. The colourful, distinctly textured images of children at play, accompanied by dragonflies, baby birds and puppies, capture the innocence and wonder of childhood.[2]
  • CC13-View of Life.png
Circle Line: View of Life by Sarkasi Said
The sweeping painting of bold colours and brushstrokes celebrates the development of Singapore from swamp to bustling city. The artist created a painting to express movement in change and nature, capturing the optimism, joy and vitality he felt for Singapore’s achievements.[2]
