Bombardier MOVIA C951 is the only type of trains running on the Downtown Line. These trains were manufactured from 2012 to 2017 under the Contract 951.

History

Bombardier Transportation was awarded Contract 951 in 2008 at a cost of $570.7 million for the construction of 219 passenger cars.[1]

Land Transport Authority exercised the option for Contract 951 in 2013 at a cost of $119.2 million for the additional construction of 45 passenger cars. [2]

Land Transport Authority then exercised its option again for the second time later in 2013 for the additional construction of 12 passenger cars, bringing the total number of trainsets to 92.

Operation

The C951 trains run on an automated system (without attendant), relying on "continuous two-way digital communication" between each controlled train and the control centre that controls the entire line.

Fleet Numbering

The car numbers of the trains range from 9001x to 9092x, where x depends on the carriage type.

  • The last digit identifies the position of the car from the front end of the train; where ‘1’ represents first car, ‘2’ represents second car and ‘3’ represents third car.
    • (Example) Passenger Vehicle 003 (also 9003) would consist of 3 cars with serial number 90031, 90032, 90033 respectively.
  • Depending on the direction of travel, the sequence may be reversed.
