On May 12 2012, a traffic accident occurred in the junction of Victoria Street and Rochor Road, when a Ferrari driver speeding through a red light rammed into a Hyundai Sonata taxicab, which in turn, rammed into a motorcycle. Three people were killed, and two severely injured.
Accident[edit]
In the wee hours of Saturday, May 12 2012, Chinese investor Ma Chi, driving a Ferrari 599 GTO, beat a red light at the junction of Victoria Street and Rochor Road. The Ferrari slammed into Comfort cabby Cheng Teng Hock's Hyundai Sonata taxicab, which in turn hit a motorcycle. The impact of the Ferrari on the Hyundai was so severe that the engine of the Hyundai was found thirty metres away from the wreck.
Initial reports suggested that Ma was intoxicated. However, a report by HSA concluded that Ma was sober at the time of the accident, based on analysis of blood samples.
Injuries[edit]
Ma and the Japanese passenger of Cheng's taxi were declared dead a few hours later. The motorcyclist suffered spinal injuries, and has now recovered; in an interview, he said he would be swearing off motorcycling for good.
Cheng had severe brain injuries and was later declared brain dead, with doctors giving him half a day to live. He managed to survive for 39 hours, and reportedly passed away after being told he was not at fault for the accident.
