STANSFIELD COLLEGE

Stansfield College, founded in 1993 is a long standing private higher education institution and a trusted provider of the University of London International degree and diploma programmes in Singapore. Through its collaboration with the University of London, Stansfield offers undergraduate degrees and diplomas in a range of academic disciplines which includes Law, the Humanities and the EMFSS suite of programmes with specialisations in Accounting, Business & Management, Banking & Finance, Economics, Mathematics & Economics and the Social Sciences.

In addition, the College has also expanded its range of programmes to include several university foundation awards including Certificate and Diploma programmes that allow students to progress academically at Stansfield or to gain admissions into overseas universities. The College also provides postgraduate diplomas and executive development courses and seminars.

The College has over 500 students with an international student body with students from over 30 countries studying at its campus.

HISTORY

Stansfield College, previously known as “Stansfield School of Business” was founded in 1993 by Mr Kannappan Chettiar as a sole proprietorship and approved by the Ministry of Education, Singapore as a private institution on 15 July 1993. Mr Chettiar started Stansfield College from humble beginnings with a loan of $20,000. With a strong determination to provide an equal educational opportunities, Mr Chettiar hired 6 British expatriates in 1993 from the UK, 4 of whom had Ph.D qualifications to teach in Singapore (an approach unheard of especially in 1993 from a private institution). This resulted in a rapid and consistent expansion for the school over the subsequent years. Since 1995, Stansfield College has been recognised by the University of London and its lead college, London School of Economics (LSE) to conduct the Diploma in Economics Programme in Singapore. It also has recognition to conduct the Diploma in Law programme.

In 2002, the College’s Chief Learning Officer & Chairman, Mr. Kannappan Chettiar was selected as one of the Top 10 Entrepreneurs of the Year. A Rotary Singapore-ASME award, it is the oldest award in Singapore that honours entrepreneurs who have established and sustained a successful and profitable business. In 2002, Stansfield was also awarded the ‘Enterprise 50’ and ranked no 32 amongst the most enterprising organizations. The award recognizes the top 50 organisations in Singapore for its enterprising spirit. In 2003, the Ministry of Education, under a new revised guideline, approved the change of name from Stansfield School of Business to Stansfield College. In the same year, the College was awarded the Singapore Quality Class for Private Educational Organisations in recognition of its educational excellence in Singapore.

In 2003, Stansfield was ranked No. 15 on the Singapore Enterprise 50 awards. The College’s Chairman was also nominated as a finalist for the Phoenix Award in recognition of his entrepreneurial determination and strong leadership skills in overcoming challenges to grow the business.

In 2004, Stansfield was ranked No. 31 on the Singapore Enterprise 50 awards. Its Chairman was selected as one of the top 5 finalists in the SICCI-DBS Indian Entrepreneur of the Year award.

In 2005, Stansfield was ranked No. 38 for the Singapore Enterprise 50 awards and its Chairman was recognised as the SICCI-DBS Indian Entrepreneur of the Year (2005).

On 13 September 2005, Stansfield opened its first major campus in India which was attended by Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam as the guest-of-honour.

In 2006, Stansfield was ranked No. 43 on the Singapore Enterprise 50 awards and it was also given a special recognition award in 2006 for having maintained the award for 5 years running. With the introduction of the Private Education Act 2009, the entity of Stansfield College Pte Ltd was formed to take over the business of Stansfield College. Stansfield College Pte Ltd has a paid up capital of $2 million.

In 2009, the University of London introduced a framework to formalise its recognition of teaching institutions and Stansfield College is invited to join the framework known as “Teaching Institutions Recognition Framework”. The University has a network of 132 centres which spans 46 countries.

In 2010, Stansfield College was awarded the 4 year Edutrust certification by the Council for Private Education, Singapore. This award is given to a private education institution for having achieved commendable performance in key areas of management and the provision of education services. Over the years the College has continued to build on its strengths and today, its mission is a simple one – ‘to make learning enjoyable’. The College’s Founder and Deans hold University of London degrees as well as qualifications from overseas universities and believe in the importance of students enjoying the learning experience. The College is dedicated towards the purpose of its mission and trust that students get more out of education if one truly enjoys the process. Students are encouraged to strive for a simple goal – enjoy learning, enjoy life! This simple focus and dedication to educational excellence has resulted in its ability to produce top students consistently over the years, including First Class Honours graduates and scholarship recipients from London School of Economics and other prestigious universities in the UK.

CAMPUS

Its campus is located at 266 Serangoon Central Drive #04-251 Singapore 550266. It facilities include its admissions office, faculty offices, classrooms, computer lab, library and study facilities.

STANSFIELD"S MANAGEMENT TEAM

The management team consisting of 3 members is led by the Chairman, Mr Kannappan Chettiar. Each member of the management team has a minimum of 20 years experience in the education industry.

Mr Kannappan Chettiar is the founder and Chairman of the College and a key member who is involved in the management of the College. As the Chairman, he leads the academic team based on his personal experience of having studied for the University of London LL.B degree as an international student. Mr Chettiar has several other degrees from reputed Universities including a Bachelor of Arts in Business from Michigan State University and a Master of Laws from the National University of Singapore. He is also a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing and has won a number of awards and accolades including being the finalist in the Rotary-ASME Top 10 Entrepreneur of the Year 2002 and the award winner for the SICCI-DBS Singapore Indian Entrepreneur award 2005.

Mr Chettiar has been guest and motivational speaker with the local universities, polytechnics and other professional bodies in Singapore conducting talks on entrepreneurship, management excellence to change management. Mr Chettiar has been a past Chairman of an Advisory Committee in a local secondary school. Mr Chettiar is also a trained SQC Assessor and has led assessment teams to conduct SQC audits of several large organisations including Keppel Shipyard and the Coastal Command (COSCOM).

Mdm Cenobia Majella is the Principal of the College and has been with the College since its founding in 1993. Prior to joining the College, Mdm Majella worked in government schools in Singapore as a teacher and holds a teaching Diploma from the National Institute of Education. Mdm Majella is the backbone of the operations and a thorough and administrator who has worked in several positions within the College including heading the operations of India.

Ms Sandra Yeo is the College’s Academic Director and has responsibility for managing the academic quality of courses taught at Stansfield. Ms Yeo commenced her teaching career in 1994 with the College and grew through the ranks within the College as its top faculty and lecturer in the areas of Economics and related subjects. She is herself a graduate of the University of London and has a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Economics and holds a Master of Science specialising in Finance from Brunel University.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

Although a commercial organisation, Stansfield College is committed to its purpose in making education available to the less privileged in the society.

In 1996 Stansfield launched an initiative with community grassroots organization like CDAC, MENDAKI and SINDA to offer over $2 million worth of scholarships for underprivileged students.

Stansfield College were also the main sponsors for Camp Sunshine (for which Mrs Goh Chok Tong is the Patron) and supported the National Community Service projects in helping wayward youths in 2004 and 2005. Stansfield College was also one of the first co-sponsors of the Home United Football Club in 2004.

Over the years, Stansfield College has awarded a number of merit scholarships based on the students’ performances in the University of London examinations and a number of its scholarship students have progressed to achieving First Class Honours degrees and being awarded further scholarships with top institutions such as London School of Economics & Political Science and other prestigious universities in the UK. The College also awards 50% [half] scholarships to Singaporeans and Permanent Residents any of its University of London degrees and diplomas.
