David Marshall, Singapore's first Chief Minister and leader of the Singapore Labour Front, resigned from his ministerial position and his party membership on 7 June 1956 following unsuccessful negotiations with the British government for full internal self-government.[1]

Lee Kuan Yew, leader of the People’s Action Party (PAP), resigned his seat in response to a public challenge from Marshall[2], who had criticised Lee’s participation in subsequent constitutional talks as a betrayal. Although Marshall later withdrew from the contest, Lee proceeded with the by-election to reaffirm his mandate.
