Liang Po Po: The Movie
Liang Po Po: The Movie (梁婆婆重出江湖) is a 1999 Singaporean film directed by Teng Bee Lian. The film stars Jack Neo, who cross-dressed as the titular Liang Popo, alongside Mark Lee and Henry Thia.
Plot synopsis[edit]
85-year-old Liang Po Po leaves the retirement home in search of a new life. On her first day out, she is robbed by the Lotus Gang, and a second robbery attempt by the same gang is only stopped by Ah Beng and Ah Seng, who are members of the rival Brothers Gang. Liang Popo begins to follow them and is slowly inducted into gang life. The gang takes advantage of Liang Popo's naivety and makes her sell pirated VCDs and collect debts.
The head of the gang, Big Boss, decides to hire two Hong Kong triad members (Wai-gor and Mun-jie) as "consultants" to help improve the image and profile of the gang. The consultants suggest robbing a bank to raise more money for expansion. Liang Popo is chosen as the robber because of her naivety, and the impression that the authorities would be lenient on an old lady. Realising the implications of the matter, Ah Beng and Ah Seng try to turn her away, but Liang Popo decides to follow through with the robbery.
The robbery is successful, but Liang Popo loses contact with Ah Beng and Ah Seng and is forced to hide. Big Boss begins to suspect that Ah Beng and Ah Seng are in cahoots with Liang Popo, although Wai-gor has secretly arranged to collect most of the ransom for himself. Big Boss holds Ah Beng and Liang Popo hostage, but after Ah Seng manages to alert the police, he and the "consultants" are arrested following a shootout. Ah Beng and Ah Seng join Liang Popo as sellers of legitimate VCDs.
