History

On May 6, 2009, the Land Transport Authority announced that Kawasaki Heavy Industries and CSR Qingdao Sifang had won over Hyundai Rotem, Bombardier Transportation and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries to secure the contract at a cost of S$369 million, despite Hyundai Rotem offering the lowest bid at S$323 million for the order of 22 trainsets. CSR Sifang handled the manufacturing and testing of the rolling stock, while Kawasaki oversaw the project and design. The C151A contract was the first successful joint venture between these two companies in the international market.[2]

Design

Exterior design

The C151A trains are similar to the C751B trains in terms of exterior looks, and have an identical propulsion motor sound. The only obvious difference comes from the front of the C151A trains. From the front, the train spotted a 'smiley face' curve design unlike the C751B trains which has a straight design. It also uses a yellow colour LED displays for Train Run Numbers while the C751B uses a orange.

Interior design

The interior of a C151A trains was however similar to the C151 trains. However, the C151A trains feature a light-color tone seats unlike the C151 counterpart. There are also 5 LED blinking light instead of 3 in the centre of the doors to warn passengers that the train doors are closing. Another notable difference is that the C151A was the first train to feature a much thicker grab poles.

The seat colours for first and last carriages is in Red and Pink, 2nd and 5th carriages are in Blue and Sky Blue and finally Middle carriages are in Green and Pale Green.

Trainset numbers

The car numbers of the trains range from x501 to x570, where x depends on the carriage type.

  • The first digit depends upon whether the car is the first, second or third car from the end of the train it is nearer to, where the first car has a 3, the second has a 1 and the third has a 2.
  • The other 3 digits is the train identification number. A full length train of 6 cars have 2 different identification number, one for the first 3 cars, and the same number plus 1, for the other three. The smaller number is always at the front.
    • For example, train 569/570 would consist of 6 cars with serial number 3569, 1569, 2569, 2570, 1570 and 3570 respectively.
