On 21 October 2002, the entire Bukit Panjang LRT service was shut down at 6.38am after a disruption caused by a dislodged train wheel, which led to the power system being crippled between Bukit Panjang and Senja stations. Partial LRT services only resumed at 6.30pm on 24 October 2002 and full services at 12pm on 26 October 2002.

For the first time in history of the MRT and LRT, LRT services were free on 27 October 2002 as a way of compensating passengers of the inconvenience.<ref>[http://www.getformesingapore.com/homepage2003/mrt_news.htm "Entire LRT system broke down". The Straits Times. 22 Oct 2002]</ref>
