Alstom Metropolis C751A is the first generation of communication-based train control (CBTC) rolling stock to be used in Singapore’s Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) lines.

History

In 1997 and 1998, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) awarded the contract for the supply of North East Line trains to Alstom.

A development in Singapore's MRT history, the trains on the North East Line are powered by overhead catenary, in contrast with the other trains on all other lines in Singapore which are powered by a third rail as the authorities consider overhead wires to be unsightly which does not allow for elevated line trains to be powered. Being the first fully underground line in Singapore, the authorities had a choice between powering the North East Line trains by overhead catenary or third rail. An overhead catenary power supply was decided upon.

Operation

The C751A trains run on an automated system (without attendant), relying on "continuous two-way digital communication" between each controlled train and the control centre that controls the entire line.

Features

Liquid Central Displays (LCD)

Six LCDs are installed at the overhead panel in each carriage that show advertisements, route information, silent commercials and movie trailers as well as safety videos. All units have ceased from showing commercials due to the lack of demand.

Platform Gap Width Reduction (PGWR)

To prevent passenger accidents due to the platform gap, additional metal strips were installed (only on 7029/7030) at the edge of every door to narrow the platform gap.

Visual Passenger Information System (VPIS)

Two VPIS are installed in each carriage that provides commuters with their route information throughout their journey.

Trainset numbers

Individual cars are given a five-digit serial number by the rail operator, SBS Transit, numbers ranging from 7x001 to 7x050, whereby "x" depends on the carriage type.

• The first digit is always a 7.
• The second digit denotes the carriage of the train, with 1, 2 and 3.
• The third digit is always a 0.
• The last 2 digits are used as the train identification number.
