The Bombardier MOVIA C951 cars belong to the newest generation of rolling stock on Singapore's Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system. 73 trainsets consisting of 3 cars each were purchased at a cost of approximately S$570.7 million for passenger service. These rail trains will serve the Downtown Line and will be delivered from late 2012 to 2016. They will be stabled at Gali Batu Depot and also on Kim Chuan Depot, just like Alstom Metropolis C830.

The train seat profile is new and designed with the comfort of commuters in mind. Ergonomic considerations have been taken into account in the design of the curves of the seat.

Reserved seats in red colour
The reserved seats are coloured red for clear and obvious differentiation of seats catered for commuters with special needs.

Perch seats (Alternative to the two-seaters)
The two-seaters in the gangway area have been converted to perch seats, except for two wheelchair spaces in the centre car of the train. Perch seats create a wider standing space for commuters. They also encourage commuters to move towards the end of the train and provide greater ease of movement during boarding or alighting from the train.

Dynamic route map display
The dynamic route map display provides commuters with their current journey status and route information. Additionally, it also indicates the side of doors that will open. This is similar to the STARIS system on the Kawasaki Heavy Industries C151 trains.

New design of straphangers
A new design of straphangers, which is also used in other metros worldwide, offers commuters a steadier grip during train journeys.

Bombardier Movia 951 is the only type of trains running on the Downtown Line. These trains were manufactured from 2012 to 2017 under the Contract 951.

History[edit]

Bombardier Transportation was awarded Contract 951 in 2008 at a cost of $570.7 million for the construction of 219 passenger cars.[1]

Land Transport Authority exercised the option for Contract 951 in 2013 at a cost of $119.2 million for the additional construction of 45 passenger cars. [2]

Land Transport Authority then exercised its option again for the second time later in 2013 for the additional construction of 12 passenger cars, bringing the total number of trainsets to 92.

Operation[edit]

The 951 trains run on an automated system (without attendant), relying on "continuous two-way digital communication" between each controlled train and the control centre that controls the entire line.

Fleet Numbering[edit]

The car numbers of the trains range from 9001x to 9092x, where x depends on the carriage type.

  • The last digit identifies the position of the car from the front end of the train; where ‘1’ represents first car, ‘2’ represents second car and ‘3’ represents third car.
    • (Example) Passenger Vehicle 003 (also 9003) would consist of 3 cars with serial number 90031, 90032, 90033 respectively.
  • Depending on the direction of travel, the sequence may be reversed.
