The station was commissioned through the Marina Line Architectural Design Competition jointly organized by Land Transport Authority and Singapore Institute of Architects. The competition required no track record and is acknowledged by the industry as one of the best run competitions held in Singapore to date.

The station is 35 metres below ground and its platforms is located at basement 5. It was the deepest station from its opening until 22 December 2013 when the Downtown Line at {{STN|M|Promenade| station}} was completed. The station design by WOHA resolves two conditions needed for the station: allowing a visual connection to the exterior to enhance the travel experience for the commuters, and enabling the station to blend into the landscape in the historic district and park location. A reflection pool, which also acts as the station roof, allows skylight to enter the station, and functions as a landscape element on the surface. With skylight entering the station, minimal artificial light is required for the station during the day. SMRT Trains
  • From Sunday, 14 November 2024 to 31 October 2025, Train Services on the Bukit Panjang LRT will end an hour earlier at 22:30 every Thursday to Sunday (except Public Holidays). This is to facilitate the upgrading of the BPLRT signalling system, as well as the testing of the new and retrofitted Light Rail Vehicles (LRVs) on the BPLRT network.   • From Saturday, 7 December 2024 to 10 December 2024. There will be no train service between Tampines station and Tanah Merah station with Simei station being closed. This is to prepare for the opening of the new East Coast Integrated Depot (ECID) in 2026, LTA and SMRT will be undertaking a series of works to facilitate the connection of tracks from the existing East–West Line to the ECID. Shuttle Buses will be operating at intervals of 5 mins.

At the 2001 SIA Awards, the SIA awarded LTA the prize for ‘Excellence in Architectural Design Competitions’.[1] In 2009, the station was awarded the "Best Transport Building" at the World Architecture Festival, on the basis that the design gives "precedence to the surrounding, historically important, colonial structures, creating a piazza-like urban space to the station underneath" and noted the design's functionality to allow natural light into the station.[5] The station later won the Award for International Architecture at the AIA's 2010 National Architecture Awards.[3] In addition, it won the Chicago Athenaeum and the European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies and International Architecture Awards in 2011.[6]
