'''North East Line (NEL)''' is the third [[Mass Rapid Transit]] (MRT) line. Traveling from one end to the other takes about 35 minutes. The line is currently 20.9 km long with 17 stations and it is fully underground and automated. It is the first line to have artwork integrated into all its 17 stations under the Art in Transit programme.

As the name implies, the line connects central Singapore to the north-eastern part of the island.

The North East Line is the first line to have artwork integrated into all its 16 stations under the Art in Transit programme. Other than the Art in Transit programme, the interior architecture for the stations are typical of the design of the early 2000s with lots of white, glass and steel.

===Planning===
===North East Line Extension===
In the initial stages of planning, {{Station |@=M |#=Outram Park}} was initially planned to be the southern terminus of the North East Line. However, in 1993, the Land Transport Authority decided to extend the line southwards to {{Station |@=M |#=HarbourFront}}, after noting that many people liked to go to the World Trade Centre (the present day HarbourFront Centre).
On 17 January 2013, a 2-kilometre extension which will extend from {{Stn|Punggol}} through Punggol North was announced. The future {{Stn|Punggol Coast}} MRT station is expected to be completed by 2024.<ref>[//www.lta.gov.sg/content/ltagov/en/upcoming_projects/rail_expansion/north_east_line_extension.html "North East Line Extension"]. Land Transport Authority. Retrieved 24 June 2020.</ref>

The line was scheduled for completion in December 2002, but due to various problems in the automation, the opening was repeatedly delayed. It was finally opened on 20 June 2003, with higher fares than existing lines supposedly to compensate for the heavy construction costs (S$4.6 billion).
===2012 train disruption===

On 15 March 2012, more than 117,000 commuters were affected during a peak hour train breakdown between {{Stn|HarbourFront}} and {{Stn|Dhoby Ghaut}} stations, caused by faulty overhead power cables at the tunnel near the {{Stn|Outram Park| station}} that had snapped. A second problem was discovered relating to electricity insulation, delaying the service further. Train services resumed at 4.35pm after nearly 12 hours of disruption.<ref>[//web.archive.org/web/20120315105114/www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/singaporelocalnews/view/1189179/1/.html "NEL's Dhoby Ghaut – Habourfront service resumes"]. ===North East Line Extension===
On 17 January 2013, a 2-kilometre extension which will run from {{Station |@=M |#=Punggol}} through Punggol North including the new Punggol Downtown was announced. It is expected to be completed by 2030.<ref>[http://app.lta.gov.sg/apps/news/page.aspx?c=2&id=38dc4ca3-5e70-4bf8-97bc-87f78e6303e7 "TWO NEW RAIL LINES AND THREE NEW EXTENSIONS TO EXPAND RAIL NETWORK BY 2030"].
