==Etymology==
===Cultural impact===
The station was named after the popular weekly Novena devotion sessions held at the nearby Catholic Church of Saint Alphonsus or more popularly known as Novena Church. The term "Novena" is derived from the Latin word "Novem" which means nine, and which refers to prayers said for nine consecutive days.<ref>[//catholicism.about.com/od/prayers/g/Novena.htm "Definition of Novena"]. Retrieved 15 March 2013.</ref>
The station is rumoured to be haunted, possibly because the area used to be the site of a Jewish cemetery.<ref>[//eresources.nlb.gov.sg/newspapers/Digitised/Page/newpaper19881017-1.1.3.aspx "Where are the ghosts?"]. Abdul Hadhi (The New Paper, 17 October 1988).</ref>
