History

Date Event
October 1984 Contract 102 consists of viaducts between Bishan Depot and Yio Chu Kang station, as well as Yio Chu Kang and Ang Mo Kio stations, was awarded to Hong Kong company Paul Y. Construction at a sum of $82.66 million.[2][3]
7 November 1987 Station officially opened[4]
31 July 2001 Station code changed from
N10
to
NS15
3 March 2003 A 23-year-old driver crashed his car onto the MRT tracks near Lentor Avenue, between Khatib and Yio Chu Kang stations. It was the first incident of its kind in the MRT system’s 15 years of operation. The accident occurred when the car, travelling at 87 km/h in a 70 km/h zone, mounted an 18cm kerb, crossed a 6m grass verge, jumped over a 1.5m drain, broke through a fence 2m from the tracks, and ascended a steep stone embankment before landing on the track. Witnesses attempted to move the vehicle off the tracks to prevent a collision, but were interrupted by an oncoming train from Yio Chu Kang. One of the witnesses signalled the train driver, who was unable to stop in time but managed to slow the train sufficiently to avoid a derailment.[5]
18 October 2011 Retrofitted with Half-Height Platform Screen Door at NSL platform
24 August 2012 Retrofitted with High Volume Low Speed (HVLS) Jet Fan at NSL platform
12 February 2015 A 29-year-old motorcyclist died after he was flung onto the MRT tracks between Khatib and Yio Chu Kang stations early morning following a traffic accident on the Lentor flyover, similar to the 2003 accident.[6]
20 May 2019 Station closed due to the construction of Canberra station[7]
