Woodlands (NS9/TE2) is a Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) station on the North–South Line and the Thomson–East Coast Line in Woodlands. It is the first MRT station to feature a bus interchange within its premises since its opening. It was built by Hyundai Engineering and Koon Construction and Transport Co Joint Venture under Contract 603 for the North–South Line and GS Engineering & Construction Corp under Contract T203 for the Thomson–East Coast Line.

The North–South Line’s station was designed by Parsons Brinckerhoff and Maunsell Consultants. It features a modern architectural style distinguished by a beige and green colour scheme, and has it’s exterior characterised by a unique circular barrel-like roof, setting it apart from other stations along the Woodlands MRT extension. This design was intended to harmonise with the anticipated modern developments in the surrounding area.[1]

The Thomson–East Coast Line’s station was designed by Arup and Aedas.[2] It features an architectural design that integrates with surrounding developments and adopts a brown and grey colour scheme with streaks of green, referencing Woodlands’ heritage as a former rubber plantation.[3] Its building columns are designed to resemble tree-like branches, reinforcing the naturalistic theme of the station’s design.[4]

Artworks

North–South Line: Faces II by Min Chen

A stainless steel sculpture standing nearly 15m tall and weighing approximately 4,000kg is installed outside the station, adjacent to the temporary bus interchange. The structure features a spiral of triangular geometric surfaces, with each cluster of triangles designed to suggest a human face, introducing a humanistic touch into an otherwise cubist form. It was originally positioned at the concourse, directly beneath an opening in the platform level, so that it could be viewed from various parts of the station.[5]

Thomson–East Coast Line: The Day’s Thoughts of a Homespun Journey into Night by Terence Lin

The artwork draws inspiration from the idea of home as a place of comfort, incorporating fabric patterns into transport forms to evoke a sense of familiarity during travel. It portrays the routes we take as an interwoven tapestry, with the drivers’ thoughts and reflections symbolically projected as thought bubbles from the headlights. The piece invites commuters to reflect on their surroundings and gain new perspectives on the journeys they make, both by day and night.[6]

North–South Line: Woodlands by Movement for the Intellectually Disabled (MINDS) @ Woodlands (Philip Siow, Flix Lai, Sim Meng Suan)

The artwork depicts the transformation of the town over time by contrasting the old and the new. It offers older residents an opportunity to reflect on memories from earlier decades, while giving younger generations a glimpse into life in the 1950s and an understanding of how the area has since developed.[7][8]

Notes:

1: The contract number is an estimate based on a statement made by a LinkedIn user in their work experience section, which reads: ‘Contract 618 Woodlands Station, supervising C603 viaduct construction… for Woodlands, Marsiling, Admiralty and Sembawang stations.’.

Spread of fake news during COVID-19

There were claims by Facebook posts that Woodlands station has been closed for disinfection due to a suspected case of the COVID-19 on 28 January 2020. However, the posts claimed were false and the station operations were still as normal.[15]
