Bus Service 196 is a inter-town route connecting residents of Clementi, Dover, Bukit Merah, Mountbatten and Marine Parade to the City areas of Outram Park, Shenton Way and Nicoll Highway. The route experiences high demand throughout the day owing to inter-town connections.

Short-Trip Bus Service 196A operates during Weekday Morning Peak hours and supplements the high demand for Service 196 prior to the opening of the Thomson-East Coast Line Stage 4 in June 2024 from residential estates around Marine Parade and Mountbatten, connecting to the City areas of Suntec City, Raffles Place and Shenton Way.
