Prior to the Downtown Line Stage 3 rationalisation, it acts as an "express variant", closely following the old route of Service 66 in the local sectors of Bukit Batok and Bedok, while filling in the public transport gap between Bedok Reservoir and Bedok South. With the opening of Downtown Line Stage 3, as well as the availability of Services 5, 46 and 59, it was amended to Serangoon Bus Interchange in December 2021 to serve new residential developments in Woodleigh and top up passenger demand in the new town.
