SMRT Buses Bus Service 188 is an inter-town route connecting the residential estates of Choa Chu Kang, Bukit Batok, Toh Guan, Clementi, Pasir Panjang, and HarbourFront via the Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE). While bypassing major town centres, the route functions as a direct transport option for students, civil service personnel, and workers travelling between homes, workplaces, and educational institutions. Service 188 runs parallel to Service 176 between Bukit Batok West and Telok Blangah station, though they serve distinct catchment areas in Jurong East and Clementi.

Historically, articulated buses were commonly deployed on Service 188 between 2000 and 2018 before being progressively replaced by double-decker buses from September 2014 onwards.

It complements Service 963 between Clementi and HarbourFront, albeit 188 serves an exit to Clementi Road and makes its way to Pasir Panjang Road while 963 makes an exit at Alexandra Road making its way too to Alexandra Road.
