SMRT Buses Bus Service 972 is an inter-town route linking the residential estates of Bukit Panjang to central areas such as Orchard and Dhoby Ghaut via the Bukit Timah Expressway (BKE) and Pan Island Expressway (PIE). This service complements Feeder Services 920 and 922 within Bukit Panjang while running parallel to the Bukit Panjang LRT between Bukit Panjang and Bangkit stations. It also helps alleviate the demand for Service 190 between Bukit Panjang Road and Orchard Road.

Service 972 holds a notable milestone, becoming the first SMRT bus service to receive double-decker deployments on 13 July 2014. Initially introduced with three Alexander Dennis Enviro500 buses, the fleet expanded into SMRT’s first fully double-deck fleet service in January 2015.

The route also complements Service 190 along the express sector of BKE and PIE and along Orchard.

This service is the 15^th bus service introduced under the Land Transport Authority’s (LTA) Bus Service Enhancement Programme (BSEP).

Following the opening of Downtown Line Phase 2, LTA initially planned to amend Service 972 to serve Bukit Timah Road and Dunearn Road, replacing the deleted sectors of Service 171 and the former Services 700 and 700A.^[1]^[2]^[3] These changes were scheduled for implementation on 16 August 2020.^[4] However, on 13 August 2020, LTA reversed its decision to amend Service 972, instead introducing Service 972M to serve the intended sectors while retaining the original route of Service 972.^[4]^[5]^[6]^[7]

Short-Trip Service 972A operates after the last bus of Service 972, terminating at Dhoby Ghaut station.
