SBS Transit Bus Service 197 is a inter-town service that connects Bedok town centre, Marine Parade, Kallang, Kampong Glam, Chinatown, Bukit Merah and Jurong East town centre. It also complements Service 97 along the same sections of Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE), serving key institutions along the way.

Demand is fairly high along Tanjong Katong and Chinatown in both directions at various times of the day as it provides direct access beyond Service 7 coverage at Guillemard Road towards Chinatown and Outram.
