SMRT Buses Bus Service 979 is an inter-town route linking the residential estates of Choa Chu Kang and Bukit Panjang. It connects residential blocks, schools, and public amenities in Choa Chu Kang Neighbourhoods 5, 6 and 7 to Yew Tee and Bukit Panjang stations, as well as Bukit Panjang Town Centre. This service alleviates the demand from Service 302 between Yew Tee station and Choa Chu Kang Crescent.

This service is the 67^th bus service introduced under the Land Transport Authority’s (LTA) Bus Service Enhancement Programme (BSEP).
