SMRT Trains
  • From Sunday, 14 November 2024 to 31 October 2025, Train Services on the Bukit Panjang LRT will end an hour earlier at 22:30 every Thursday to Sunday (except Public Holidays). This is to facilitate the upgrading of the BPLRT signalling system, as well as the testing of the new and retrofitted Light Rail Vehicles (LRVs) on the BPLRT network. Land Transport Authority SMRT Trains
  • From Saturday, 7 December 2024 to 10 December 2024. There will be no train service between Tampines station and Tanah Merah station with Simei station being closed. This is to prepare for the opening of the new East Coast Integrated Depot (ECID) in 2026, LTA and SMRT will be undertaking a series of works to facilitate the connection of tracks from the existing East–West Line to the ECID. Shuttle Buses will be operating at intervals of 5 mins.

  • From Monday, 25 November 2024, City Direct Service will be introduced from Tengah Drive to the Central Business District (CBD), operating during morning and evening peak hours. Please refer here for more information.

Land Transport Authority Go-Ahead
  • From Monday, 25 November 2024, City Direct Service will be extended to Bayfront Avenue, Temasek Avenue, Temasek Boulevard and Raffles Boulevard. North South Line (NSL) is the first Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) line. Traveling from one end to the other takes about 65 minutes. The line is currently 45 km long with 27 stations, which includes Canberra station.

History

First phase of development

The North South line is the first MRT line in Singapore, with the first section from Yio Chu Kang to Toa Payoh opening on 7 November 1987. on 12 December 1987, nine more stations from Novena to Outram Park opened. [1] The line was extended northward to Yishun on 20 December 1988 and it began independent operations on 4 November 1989, when the extension to Marina Bay was opened.

Second phase of development (Woodlands extension)

After the Branch Line opened in 1990, the Woodlands MRT line was envisioned to link Yishun and Choa Chu Kang.[2] During the initial planning of the line, Sembawang station was only intended as a provisional station, to be built at a later date as Sembawang town was not constructed then. Kranji station was not planned. But on the second round of planning, the government decided to build these stations and omit Sungei Kadut station from the plan. Sungei Kadut station will be built later if the town's population justifies the necessity for the station. With the Woodlands Extension opening on 10 February 1996, the Branch Line became part of the North South line.[2]

Jurong East modification project

The Jurong East modification project entailed the construction of a new platform and the addition of a fourth track to Jurong East station to reduce waiting times and crowding at the station during peak hours.[3] The modification project was completed on 27 May 2011.[4] The track and platform was initially opened during morning peak hours only, but since December 2011, they also operate during the evening peak hours.[5]

North South line extension

A 1km, one station extension from Marina Bay to Marina South Pier station was opened on 23 November 2014.[6] At first, only 1 in 4 of the southbound trains terminated at Marina South Pier. The other three trains still terminated at the ex-terminus, Marina Bay, possibly due to low demand. This restriction was lifted on May 2017 due to the inauguration of the new signalling system.

Canberra station

On 17 January 2013, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced that a feasibility studies was being conducted to create a station between Sembawang and Yishun stations.[7] The feasibility studies was completed in 2014 and Canberra station was to be built.[8] Shortly later on 1 August 2014, LTA announced that construction will start in mid-2015 and is expected to be completed by 2019.[9] Construction works for Canberra station commenced on 26 March 2016.[10] This station, which is an Infill station, will have side platforms, similar to that of Dover. The construction costs S$90 million[11] and is expected to be completed by 2019 to serve upcoming developments near the station.[12]

The rolling stock consists of Kawasaki Heavy Industries C151, Siemens C651, Kawasaki Heavy Industries & Nippon Sharyo C751B, Kawasaki Heavy Industries & CSR Qingdao Sifang C151A and Kawasaki Heavy Industries & CSR Qingdao Sifang C151B trains. These trains operate from two depots along the line, Bishan Depot near Bishan station and Ulu Pandan Depot near Jurong East station.
