2011 train disruption

On 15 December 2011, a train heading northbound had been stuck up by a damaged power rail at about 7pm, causing a train disruption between Bishan and Marina Bay stations. Southbound services resumed as per normal from 9pm, but northbound services were closed for the night for further maintenance works. About 127,000 commuters were affected by this disruption.[3] Later investigation found out that the disruption was caused by a defective fastener in the Third Rail Support Assembly (TRSA) on the northbound track between Dhoby Ghaut and City Hall stations, resulting in the third rail to sag, resulting in the whole segment of track impassable to all trains.[4]

Artworks

  • NE6-Interchange.png
North East Line: Interchange by Milenko & Delia Prvacki
As the title suggest, this large-scale artwork represents the interchange between the stations lines that run through Dhoby Ghaut. A marriage of ceramic and mosaic works that span walls, climb columns and sprawl over the station floor, they draw upon the cultural richness and artistic heritage of Singapore and the region, as well as ideas of permanent movement.[5]
  • NE6-Universal Language.png
North East Line: Universal Language by Sun Yu-Li
Spread across the station are some 180 pieces of art tiled into the floors and columns. Featuring various sets of prehistoric symbols such as hunters, fishes and birds, acting as wayfinding icons which lead the commuters towards the columns that signify each route of the station. These symbols also come together to form a large floor mural and vibrant mosaic wall panel at the main concourse.[5]
  • CC1-Man and Environment.png
Circle Line: Man and Environment by Baet Yeok Kuan
The 36 white gypsum sculptures of ‘Man and Environment’ are spread evenly across three pillars, depicting things such as rocks, plants, textures and wall cracks. These enlarged depictions encourage commuters to be more aware of little details in their surroundings that they fail to notice during their commute.[5]
