SBS Transit Bus Service 161 is an inter-town bus service that connects the residential estates of Hougang, Sengkang, and Woodlands. It primarily utilises the Tampines Expressway (TPE) corridor to link the northeast (Sengkang) with the north (Woodlands), making it one of five bus services (bus services 168, 858, 965, and 969) popular among residents travelling between the northeast and north.

Travelling between NE16STCSengkang and NS9TE2Woodlands stations takes approximately 35 minutes, whereas the MRT (via NE12CC13Serangoon, and CC17TE9Caldecott) takes approximately 55 minutes. While bus service 965 provides an alternative route between Sengkang and Woodlands, it took a longer journey via Yishun. The convenience and time savings by skipping Jalan Kayu makes this service a practical option for commuters, as compared to the MRT.
