Go-Ahead Express Service 518 is a full day express service that connects the residential areas of Pasir Ris, Tampines and part of Bedok Reservoir to the city areas of Newton, Orchard shopping belt, and tourist attractions around Bayfront in Downtown Core and is the 3^rd longest bus route in Singapore.

As one of the oldest express services, it sees frequent patronage and high demand by commuters between Tampines Avenue 1, Tampines Avenue 2, Orchard and Bayfront during weekday peak hours, as well as weekends and public holidays. In addition, it also offers time-competitive alternatives to the Downtown Line when traffic conditions along express sectors are smooth. For instance, it takes 20 minutes plying a non-stop sector of Pan Island Expressway (PIE) and Central Expressway (CTE) from DT29Bedok North to NS21DT11Newton, while it takes 20 minutes plying another non-stop sector of Kallang – Paya Lebar Expressway (KPE) and Pan Island Expressway (PIE) from DT16CE1Bayfront to DT29Bedok North.

Service 518 also complements Service 39 between Tampines West and Pasir Ris West, and Service 8 between Tampines East and Temasek Polytechnic, alleviating demand from both overcrowded services during weekdays peak hours.

In December 2019, the Public Transport Council announced that polytechnic students will be entitled to student concessionary fares. This led to increased demand for this express service among Temasek Polytechnic students commuting during morning peak hours on polytechnic school days. In response to overcrowded buses from Pasir Ris East, downroute trips from Tampines East during weekday mornings have been introduced to handle the high student demand.

Another unidirectional variant, Service 518A, offers a faster journey for commuters from Pasir Ris to Newton, skipping the entire Tampines sector during morning peak hours.
